X-WR-CALDESC:Many older adults experience a fear of falling. People who dev
elop this fear often limit their activities\, which can result in physical
weakness\, making the risk of falling even greater. A Matter of Balance i
s a program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity l
evels among older adults. The program includes eight two-hour classes pres
ented to a small group of 8-12 participants led by trained coaches. The pr
ogram enables participants to reduce the fear of falling by learning to vi
ew falls as controllable\, setting goals for increasing activity levels\,
making small changes to reduce fall risks at home\, and exercise to increa
se strength and balance. This nationally recognized program was developed
at the Roybal Center at Boston University.
